PHOENIX, Ariz.— The Arizona State men’s golf team went in to NCAA regional competition with one goal in mind and the team achieved.

ASU competed in the San Diego regional May 14-16 at the Farms Golf Club needing to finish in the top five in order to advance to the NCAA Championship tournament. The no. 3 ranked Sun Devils fired rounds of 300- 281- 282 = 863, which was good enough for second place and a ticket to the NCAA finals.

Head coach Tim Mickelson shared his thoughts on twitter about his team’s success. Mickelson has now coached his Sun Devils to two NCAA finals in his first four years as head coach. Historically ASU has been very good, advancing to the NCAA championship tournament 11 of the past 14 seasons.

Individually for the Devils, Jon Rahm stole the show on the 6,947 yard par 72 course. Rahm shot rounds of 73- 64- 69 = 206 and captured the NCAA San Diego regional title.

Rahm, a junior from Spain, has been electric for ASU all season long. He won three times this spring and now has seven career individual titles to his credit, putting him in elite company with Phil Mickelson (16 wins) and Billy Mayfair (8 wins) as the only players in Sun Devils history with seven or more victories.

Rounding out ASU’s regional team was fellow junior Max Rottluff, from Germany, who struggled in round one shooting a 78 but came back strong with rounds of 71 and 69 (218) on day two and three to finish in a tie for 18th with teammate Ki Taek Lee (74- 73- 71 =218). Nicolo Galletti shot 75-73-76 = 224 for a T40 showing and Alberto Sanchez shot 79-82-73 = 234 for a T68 finish.

ASU will hit the links again for the NCAA finals May 29- June 3 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
